“You will Know the Truth”: Three Truths That will Set You Free

I struggle with self-worth. It is a deep soul-wound that I will battle until God delivers me from it or I am in His arms. It is my thorn. I never want people to see that part of me, and I usually hide it very well, or so I thought.

Today’s Truths

I played tennis today with some fabulous ladies. Once we were done with our clinic, one of them approached me, took my hand, and said, “God has been telling me to tell you this for three weeks now, and today I just have to. He wants you to know that you are enough. You are so hard on yourself. Just enjoy being enough.” Tears welled in my eyes. I could not believe what I was hearing and how much I needed to hear it. I don’t think I realized what a vice grip the truth I was working in had on me until God delivered his truth through someone else.

This is just how beautiful God is. He will deliver his truths to us as he knows we can receive them.  He knew I needed to audibly here those words. He needed me to know that the truth in which I am working is not his truth. He needed me to know that hiding is not an option. Hiding does not bring the freedom He desires for me. To be seen can be uncomfortable, but it was freeing for me today.

God provided me a truth today through this precious person and the Holy Spirit: You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32). Yes, this verse we have most likely have all heard. We often hear it related to knowing God’s truth of salvation and how that salvation and redemption sets us free. That truth remains. However, God has given me knew insight into this verse.

God’s Truths that will Set You Free

The Greek term for truth in scripture is  ἀλήθεια meaning “what is true in any matter under consideration.” The following truths are insights the Holy Spirit offered me as so that I, we, may know truth in any matter under consideration:

1)        We are God’s first love

There has never been a moment when God has not loved us. He has been committed to us since he called the heavens and earth into existence. There has never been a heartbeat of his that hasn’t had his children’s name on it.

Therefore, God’s desire for us is to live abundantly (John 10:10). He longs for us to live as he created us to be: his royal priesthood, a people belonging to God (1 Peter 2:9). Additionally, John 10:29 reminds us that we cannot be plucked from the Father’s hand and there is nothing in all creation that can separate us from his love (Romans 8:38). He has fought hard for us (Exodus 14:14) and longs for us to know the freedom that his love, grace, hope, peace, and mercy provide.

To live as God’s first love, we need to evaluate the truth we are living in. If it is not in accordance to God’s truths, then the Enemy is leading us from what God has designed for us.

2)        The Devil has schemes

Sounds like a terrible truth to add here, but it is imperative that we remember the Enemy is good at what he does. And, if he can distract us from the worth, value, significance, and beauty God has embedded within us, why wouldn’t he? The Enemy prowls around looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). He is not in a red suit and pitchfork waiting to be seen. He lurks, he prods, he distorts not only the truths of God, but also our our view of ourselves as well as God’s views of us.

Therefore, to experience the freedom God has called us to, we must guard our hearts and minds (Proverbs 4:23). Additionally, thinking on things above and whatever is true, noble, right and pure will ensure we are acting in God’s truths rather than the Enemy’s (Colossians 3:2; Philippians 4:8).

An additional thought to consider is that this is not easy. If there were a switch to flip so that we acted only in God’s truths, that would be great. However, this work is hard. We are not a failure if we do not achieve this in a day, a week, or even a year. All this is work in progress. Just as God supplies us grace daily, we also need to supply ourselves grace so that we can ready our hearts for the truths of God.

 3)        We are free

If we act in the truth of the Enemy, then we are worthless, we don’t matter or are never good enough will be the lenses through which we see life. It will be “true in any matter under consideration.” And, these words bind us, enslave us. They become our prison. However, the truth of God presents a different world: freedom

No where in his word does he refer to us as worthless, insignificant, or not good enough. In fact, God is clear, we are his prized possession: “God decided to give us life through the word of truth so we might be the most important of all things he made” (James 1:18). The Passion translations states “…favorite ones out of all his creation.” God prizes and desires us! He longs for us to live in His freedom.

Additionally, Galatians 5:1 states, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” While God has called us to freedom from a “yoke of slavery” which is sin, I believe he has also called us to freedom from a “yoke of slavery” which can be the Enemy’s whispers of worthlessness. To no longer be bound by this, we need to embrace the truths of Christ, the freedom of Christ.

Through memorizing God’s word and hiding it in our hearts, we can begin the shift to freedom. We will be able to see more clearly whose truths we are adhering to. This allows us to see if we are acting in a yoke of slavery or living in the freedom of Christ.

Final Thoughts

The work of shifting our truths to truths that provide freedom may not be an easy or flawless task, but it is a necessary one if we want to live in the love and freedom Christ so freely gives. When we shift our truths, the Enemy won’t like it and may buckle down even harder, but remember we are a royal priesthood. Our King is fighting for us!

Below are the verses in a format that you can print and cut out if you wish. Place these verses around you where you can read them every day. May these become your truths so that you may live in the freedom God longs for you to know.

Challenge Questions:

1)        What is the truth you are living in? Write examples of those truths.

2)        Do these truths provide you freedom? If so, write how they do. If not, write how they have been a “yoke a slavery” for you.

3)        Pick a scripture (or more) to memorize and hide in your heart this week.
